The Key To Being a Great Coach

My high school math teacher wasn't only a teacher, he was also my wrestling coach.

Today I want to share how one math problem taught me the value of a great coach and how YOU can become a better one too.

One day, Coach Castle was teaching us how to use the Pythagorean theorem.

I couldn't figure out what the hell I was doing.

I went up to him and said, "Coach, I don't know how to get this answer."

He told me he didn't know EITHER, he was "only a history teacher."

That was a lie.

So, I went back to my desk for 45 minutes and I tried to figure out the problem.

Eventually, I DID. I was never more excited in my life.

So here is your Tough Love lesson:

If he taught me like a TEACHER, he would have showed me how to do the problem. But, as a COACH, he knew I already had the skillset.

All he had to do was put me in a position to figure out the problem on my own.

If you want to become a great coach, stop showing your clients how to do things.

Ask the right questions and let THEM figure it out.

That way, even when you're not there, they will be able to use the skills you've shown them to figure it out on their own.
