Are Vlogs the Future for Entrepreneurial Content?

For as long as I’ve been a YouTube creator, I’ve been making thought leadership pieces where I sit at my desk and share something I’ve learned, hoping to offer a lesson that viewers can take home and apply. The problem with this approach is that it takes a lot of time, effort, and inspiration to come up with such content. If I’m being honest, I don’t even watch that kind of content. Instead, I find myself drawn to vlogs – the behind-the-scenes glimpses into someone’s daily life, with lessons shared along the way.

This realization has led me to question if vlogs are the future of content for entrepreneurs. My favorite creators are those who show, not just tell. They provide a window into their lives, sharing lessons organically. Despite advising other creators and business owners to adopt this approach, I’ve been hesitant to do it myself. But today, I’m starting something different – my vlogging journey.

The Appeal of Vlogs

For years, I’ve told my wife that I would start vlogging. Instead of creating polished, thought leadership videos, I’m going to show you how I live my life and share advice along the way. The excuses for not starting have been numerous – my office and home are messy, my life is boring, and I mostly work and take care of my family. But maybe that’s what makes it real and authentic.

Vlogs offer a more personal and relatable connection. Viewers get to see the unfiltered reality of an entrepreneur’s life. This authenticity can be more engaging than scripted videos.

The Inspiration Behind Vlogs

One of the creators who inspired me is Sky, a vlogger whose content I stumbled upon by accident. His vlogs are fascinating because, often, they don’t have a definitive message. Instead, they are a series of observations and experiences, with any lessons being secondary. This contrasts sharply with my own content, where I feel pressured to provide clear, actionable lessons in every video.

Watching vloggers like Sky made me realize that the value of vlogs lies in their ability to document daily life and share experiences naturally. This authenticity is something I believe more business owners and entrepreneurs will lean into, especially as AI makes scripted content more common and less distinctive.

Documenting Life Through Vlogs

One major reason I’m pivoting to vlogs is the desire to document my life. Inspired by Casey Neistat, the godfather of vlogging, I want to create a visual diary of my days. Neistat vlogged daily for over 500 days, capturing moments with his family, his discoveries, and his experiences. This idea of having a video archive of my life is incredibly appealing.

By vlogging, I can document moments with my family, my work, and my personal growth. This not only provides content for my audience but also creates a personal record that I can look back on. It’s a way to capture the fleeting moments and milestones that make up life.

Overcoming the Challenges of Vlogging

Of course, vlogging comes with its own set of challenges. Filming in public is awkward, as I discovered during a lunch date with my wife. Holding a camera and talking to it while people stare is not easy. But it’s part of the process of becoming comfortable with sharing more of my life.

There’s also the challenge of figuring out what each vlog should look like. Do I start every video with a “good morning” and document my day from there? How do I structure these videos? These are questions I’m still working through, but the key is to start and learn as I go.

The Future of Entrepreneurial Content

I believe that vlogs could very well be the future of content for entrepreneurs. They provide an authentic, engaging way to share one’s journey, offer lessons, and connect with an audience on a deeper level. Vlogs can show the real, unfiltered process of building a business, with all its ups and downs, making it more relatable and inspiring for viewers.

As I embark on this vlogging journey, I invite you to join me. Let’s explore this new format together and see where it takes us. Whether you’re an entrepreneur looking to share your story or a viewer seeking authentic content, I believe there’s immense value in the world of vlogs.

So, are vlogs the future for entrepreneurial content? I think they might be. Let’s find out together.
